Special Tour of LeMay - America’s Car Museum
Saturday, August 19th

The Portland Section has arranged a special guided tour at the LeMay – America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, Washington. It is located adjacent to I-5, so you’ve probably seen it as you’ve driven from Portland to Seattle.
Seattle area members please contact Stacy Rollins for the time and place to meet the group.
Background and history. Harold LeMay was a Tacoma area businessman who loved cars. Some have said he never met a car he didn’t like … and want to own. Over several decades he amassed thousands of cars, trucks, and motorcycles. These were stashed in warehouses all over the Tacoma area. Eventually LeMay acquired a former private boarding school in Spanaway (south side of Tacoma) where many of these vehicles were housed. It’s now called the LeMay Collection at Marymount. You may remember our Portland section did a tour of this collection in August 2021.
After Harold LeMay passed away the City of Tacoma donated land in downtown Tacoma to build a first-class car museum, which is called LeMay – America’s Car Museum. The LeMay family donated cars to this museum to get it started. It opened in 2012 and has grown over the years to house 350 cars; not just LeMay’s cars, but others the museum has collected and restored on its own over the last decade. After our 2021 visit to Marymount, some of us went to the downtown museum and had a truly wonderful time. The cars are immaculate and the staff very knowledgeable. It was well worth the visit.
